Many soapmakers use palm oil, but we chose not to because we found there are more luxurious and beneficial oils to use. Palm oil in the soap making industry is used for many reasons, one being that it creates a hard bar of soap that lathers very well and it is very inexpensive. Most commercial soaps primarily manufacture bars of soap with palm oil and/or palm kernel oil, which can be overdrying to the skin. The overconsumption of palm oil is another reason we do not use it. Researchers have found a link between palm oil and the deforestation of the rainforests in Indonesia and Malaysia. Palm oil plantations are directly destroying the habitat of orangutans and other rainforest animals. Sustainable palm oil is one solution, yet the standards for sustainability are not strictly enforced.

Currently, all of our soap recipes are made of at least 84% certified organic oils.  Some are close to 96%.  We strive to use organic ingredients when possible.  Our paper labels are embedded with wildflower seeds and are plantable. The paper itself is lotka paper, made from the bark of the Daphne bush which regenerates naturally providing a renewable resource.  By using this specific paper, we are benefiting the economic enterprise of rural craftspeople in Nepal.

The seeded paper we use are embedded with a mix of flower seeds that include Red Corn Poppy, Corn Poppy, Spurred Snapdragon, Catchfly, English Daisy, Showy Evening Primrose, Gold Yarrow, Roman Chamomile, Tussock Bellflower, Foxglove, Fringed Sagewort, White Yarrow, Red Yarrow, Monkeyflower, and Creeping Thyme.  To plant, soak in water, cover with 1/8″ of soil, and keep moist.  These annuals need 4 hours a day of sunlight and grow to be about 3′.

All of our products are inspired by Marie’s Thai-American background. She infuses common Asian ingredients with western herbs and oils.
